Dryer Vents: Your home’s worst ignitemare.

We all know that after drying a load of laundry, you tend to clean the lint tray before the next use. This not only makes the dryer run more efficiently, but it also reduces the risk of a dryer vent fire. According to FEMA, each year there are approximately 2,900 dryer fires in the United States alone, with 5 incidents per year resulting in fatalities. Most of these fires have one thing in common. Lots of lint.

Dryers have outlets that overtime can become clogged with lint and debris. The hot air used in drying clothing can actually ignite the fibers within the vents causing catastrophic damages. Not only does the lint act like flash paper, igniting quickly and burning faster, but these fires can grow without notice, quickly spreading throughout the home.

It is important to routinely clean your dryer Vents before and after each use to minimize the fire risks associated with dirty vents. But sometimes cleaning isn’t enough, as even over time lint can bridge within vents, posing a highly flammable risk. It is recommended that you have your dryer Vents cleaned regularly. Professional dryer vent cleaning services can greatly reduce the risk of fire as a result of dirty vents. Professional cleaning services can also maximize energy efficiency, by allowing your appliance to work less harder. It is recommended that you get your vents cleaned everything 4-6 months.

How to tell if your dryer vent is filthy:

Sometimes it can be difficult to distinguish whether or not your dryer needs to have it’s outlet vents professionally cleaned. A good rule of thumb is when in doubt, clean them out. But there can also be a few visual indicators as well. For instance, try running your dryer empty for 50 mins. After the cycle is complete, remove the lint tray. The tray should be visually free from lint and fiber. If you see lint as you would if you were to have a load inside, then it may be time for you to schedule professionals to clean your dryer vents. Another way to tell is to get a strand of clear masking tape, wrap it around your hand adhesive side out, and with your dryer running, place your tape covered hand in front of the outlet for 2-3 minutes. Visually inspect the tape for traces of lint of fiber. If you notice a large amount stuck to the tape, or large bits of lint, your vents probably need to be cleaned.

Environmentally Safe Clean Air

When you do decide to have your dryers professionally cleaned, you may be concerned with how safe it is for the environment. Well lucky for you and the ozone layer it is completely safe and environmentally friendly. No harsh chemical products are used in cleaning, so you don’t have to worry about obnoxious odors or pesky chemicals. A specific tool is used to snake it’s way through the vents, gently dislodging any stubborn lint or dust stuck on the walls of the vents. All residue is vacuumed and disposed of properly, so you don’t have to!
